After few delays apple is back on track with the new iPhone 12 which comes with four variants, starting with off with new 5.4 inch Mini and all the way up to 6.7 inch iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Lets start off with the design, Apple brought back the flat edge design from the iPhone 4 which I don’t have a good feeling of it, since we usually keep our phones in our pocket, the flat edge design of the iPhone will barely be visible on the denims and might feel uncomfortable. While holding it on the hands, will give different feeling which is very positive.
Especially, I’m very attracted to the Aluminium body design of iPhone 12 than the iPhone 12 Pro because of that matte finish of the side panel which I believe gives some grip to it. Either way u guys gonna buy the Protective cases which rules out those aesthetics.
Apple states that it’s 11% thinner from iPhone 11. So, Overall I love the change in design and it’s very attractive to me. This time Apple brought up a mini iPhone concept which still holds all the internals same as the normal iPhone 12.
The only difference we could spot is the change in screen size and $100 less than the normal 6.1 inch iPhone 12, which I appreciate apple for taking that move without degrading any internals or the design aesthetics of the mini iPhone.
And if we look into the Pro models of the iPhone 12, It even adopts the flat edge design and comes in stainless steel body where, the back of the phone is a kind of matte finish and side panels are very polished and glossy which attracts a lot of fingerprints. so, look out for that.
And this is the reason why I choose the iPhone 12 over the Pro and there are other reasons too.
All the iPhone 12 models comes with the IP68 Rating where u could drop your phone to up to 6 meters for 30 mins in water and in the note given by apple, the warranty is not covered for any liquid damage. And I feel weird about it.
It’s nice that Apple brought the Super Retina XDR Display aka OLED panels to all of the iPhone 12 line up this time. So, I give a Big Thumbs up to that. The iPhone 12 mini has only two major difference from the normal iPhone 12, they are the screen size and the battery capacity which the mini variant has around 2200mah battery while the normal iPhone 12 has around 2800mah battery. The Mini variant of the iPhone 12 has a 5.4 inch display while the normal iPhone 12 has a 6.1 inch display.
And the interesting fact about these display is that it has a 1200 nits of brightness with HDR support. In addition to that, it has a 2 million to 1 Contrast ratio. Which means the photos and the video that u watch on this display have more colours and much more vibrant to watch. And the thing which I miss the most is the 120hz refresh rate panel where most of its competitor have caught up on that and apple is still behind it giving their new line up with 60hz refresh rate panel and I believe that iOS 14’s animation and transition will do the job to keep up to competitor’s high refresh rate panel. And this display also applies to the Pro models where I couldn’t find any difference with them. So there comes another BIG thumbs up to that.
Speaking of display, apple brought up a new protection for the display and they call it CERAMIC SHIELD. Where they used up a new material called nano ceramic crystal and apple claims that it’s harder than most of the metals and gives 4X times better drop performance compared to previous iPhone 11 which means it can survive unintentional drops to an extent which apple says it’s a breakthrough. And I’m impressed that this ceramic shield coating for the display is available on all iPhone 12 line up.
When it comes to the iPhone cameras it’s always top-notch and the way that apple maintains the colour profile of each photo have gone to next level. This time apple have focused on the night shots and HDR technology on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.
Previously on iPhone 11 night shots where only available on the wide lens but, this time both ultra wide and wide lens is capable of capturing night shots and it’s even more better. Since, the wide camera lens have more aperture this time which brings more light which in turn provides better detail in every photo u take no matter it’s day or night.
Even u can capture the beautiful time-lapses with the power of night shot. Apple have even improved the day shots by using the smart HDR3 And Deep Fusion technology.
It works with the help of Machine Learning and recognising the scene in the frame and automatically decides the priority of the element and brings extra detail and sharpness to the shot. And when u take selfies all the technologies like Deep fusion, Smart HDR 3 and Dolby vision comes in action to give the best shot possible even in the dark.
In addition to that the Apple have brought the Dolby Vision technology to the iPhone 12 line up. Which gives more massive 60 times more colours to the video u capture in real-time. Which is mind blowing.
Usually professionals tune up the video to Dolby vision format for better depth in colour using special equipment. But, now u can capture, edit and share the 10-bit Dolby Vision footage on the iPhone itself like a Pro.
Even these apply to the Pro models as well. And for Pro They have taken even more further by having a third lens which is the telephoto lens and those three lens have bigger lens and it doesn’t stop there.
Apple have introduced the LIDAR sensor on iPhone which was previously seen on the iPad Pro models. The lidar on iPhone 12 Pro not only brings better AR experiences, it pushes the quality of portrait shots taken and it even allows u take portraits in night shot. And for the Pro Max model, the wide and telephoto lens is much more bigger and the Image stabilization have taken to next level by having a Sensor shift technology which counteracts the hand movements by adjusting the sensor of the lens instead of lens itself.
Wireless charging on the iPhone 12 line up have improved by having a MagSafe technology. This MagSafe equips a bunch coils and sensors to check what attaches to the phone and the phone reacts to it accordingly. Even the new iPhone protective cases comes with MagSafe to attach other accessories like MagSafe leather wallet. Introduction of this new MagSafeis very thoughtful but, I’m worried about the health concerns about the MagSafe and how it will react to our body if we expose it for too long through the pockets.
And How could I miss the powerhouse of the iPhone 12, All these camera features and intelligence in MagSafe are all powered by the Powerful A14 Chip which is one the most hyped processors in technology industry.
it’s due to it’s size, it’s a 5nm chip and it’s predecessors have dug the path to Apple Silicon which is a ARM based processors and it’s a huge leap for apple MacBook line up. So, This A14 chip on iPhone 12 is very powerful, it has a 6 core CPU and a quad core GPU enabling 11 trillion operations per second. And this is the reason why Dolby vision was possible on an iphone because of it’s industry leading computational power. This A14 chip also equips a new image signal processor where the raw format of the pics are sent through it to provide more detailed image which is also used to power the Dolby vision. And this also enables another feature called Apple ProRAW which is format capturing the raw footage from iphone 12 Pro for more professional oriented work flow which enables to process a image in various ways.
And finally 5G, this time all the iphone 12 models comes with all bands of 5G, thanks to sub6 giga hertz antenna and milli meter wave antenna on the iphone which is very nice to have But, according to it’s too early and 5G coverage is not wide enough.
And Overall, this year iPhone line up doesn’t have that much innovation, it’s just change in design, improvement in the camera segment and magnetic accessories which previously seen on the old mac book air used for charging. Here’s your take in this video, if u own a iPhone X or 11 well, And don’t upgrade to this phone jus for the sake of 5G, and if u think u want more power for your day to day task well, iPhone 12 is the choice. And for the people who are entering the apple ecosystem, well iPhone 12 or 12 mini is the best choice or if u r looking for cheapest iPhone, Go for the iPhone 11, which is quite similar to iPhone 12 in certain cases and prices are cheaper than the new iPhone 12.
And the most controversial part of this iPhone 12 is the box which comes in, Apple have removed the earpods and charger from the box for the iPhones to save up the environment against the e-waste which is appreciated and if you want a charger for the iPhone, u need to spend extra 20 bucks for it.
